Ways to Make Your Community Safe from Gun Violence by Eliezer Pozner

According to GunViolenceArchive.org, there have been a total of 3,887 gun-related deaths in the United States since the beginning of this year January 1, 2016 to now. That's an average of 35 people per day. The numbers include everything from multiple-victim gang assaults to incidents of self-defense and homicides. The people who fell victim to this were parents, teachers, kids, friends, you name it.

Many communities have been left scarred by these incidents and many of you can tell a story of someone you know that has lost their life to gun violence. It's an issue that affects all of us and each of us. Sadly, many more preventable deaths will occur this year because the people are not taking a stand.

But how do we do it? How can you, one person, help solve this national epidemic? Where do you start? The great news is that there are many things you, one person, and we can do to help reduce the amount of people harmed by gun violence. Here are 3 ways you can help play your part.

1. Focus on just your community and area first. We have 50 states in the U.S. and over 19,000 cities. It would be impossible for one person to go to each and every town to try and prevent the next gun-related crime. But if we all simply focused on the area that we live in day to day, it makes the huge mountain seem more like small speed bump. Each area is a little different in the types of crimes that happen most often so the needs are different. Some areas require 24-hour surveillance, while others just need a dog that barks really loud. Access your area for what will best fit.

2. Form a Neighborhood Watch group. This is hands down one of the most cost effective and easiest ways to prevent gun-related and other crimes in your community. Start with planning a neighborhood meeting at least a week in advance and post flyers door to door. The goal of the meeting is to access the neighborhood's want for the group and to get an idea of how many people are interested in getting involved. Since this will make law enforcement's job easier, your local police department will be more than happy to have an officer attend your meeting to provide tips and incite.

3. Send a petition to your local Senator to require background checks for guns sold by licensed dealers AND private sellers. What many people know is that a background check is required when a licensed dealer sells a gun. What many people don't know is that if a private seller wants to sell his/her gun, no background check is needed. This allows felons, people with dangerous mental illnesses and others access to guns. Writing a petition signed by the people in your community will let your Senator know you care about the issue.
